Working With AI, Not Through It

For the last year, the conversation around AI in software has oscillated between two extremes: panic and fantasy. 

On one end: fear that AI will make software engineering a “dead field,” and that students should steer clear because the industry will soon be unrecognizable. On the other: the idea that anyone can just chat with an AI, “vibe code” their way to production-ready software, and ship real systems without the hard parts of engineering. 

Both takes miss what’s actually happening. 

AI is absolutely reshaping how software gets built, but not by eliminating the need for engineers. It’s doing something more subtle and, if we handle it well, far more powerful: compressing time, expanding capability, and forcing us to get clearer about what “good engineering” really means. 

The real shift: speed without understanding is a trap 

AI can feel like magic the first time you use it seriously. You describe a concept; it produces a structure. You ask for a refactor; it obliges. You request test cases; it drafts them. In seconds. 

That’s the upside: AI can accelerate the parts of software work that are repetitive, mechanical, or blank-page painful. 

But acceleration changes the failure modes. 

When you build fast without fully understanding what’s being built, you don’t just get bugs, you get unknown unknowns: hidden coupling, security gaps, performance cliffs, flaky behavior, and maintenance nightmares that only show up when the system hits real-world complexity. 

This is where the “vibe coding” hype breaks down. 

Vibe coding is real and it has a ceiling 

Yes, a non-engineer can sit down with an AI and produce something that looks like an app. Demos are impressive. Early prototypes appear functional. The barrier to entry is lower than it’s ever been. 

But the moment you try to scale beyond a simple task-list app, you hit the invisible wall: architecture, data modeling, security, deployment, observability, performance, compliance, cost controls, and the thousand small decisions that separate a demo from a durable product. 

You can get “structure” from AI. You can even get decent patterns. 

What you can’t outsource is the judgment required to decide: 

  • what trade-offs are acceptable, 
  • what risks are tolerable, 
  • what constraints are real, 
  • and what needs to be true for the system to survive contact with production. 

AI can generate code. It can’t own outcomes. 

Fear-mongering is also wrong: engineering isn’t dyingit’s evolving 

There’s a persistent story that shows up in every major inflection point: “This change will erase your job.” 

We heard it with the shift from on-prem to cloud. We heard it with frameworks that abstracted away low-level work. We heard it with low-code platforms. Each time the tooling changed, the demand for real engineering stayed, because complexity didn’t disappear. It moved. 

AI is doing the same thing. 

The job isn’t “writing code” in the narrow sense. The job is solving problems with software responsibly: 

  • defining what to build, 
  • ensuring it’s correct and safe, 
  • making it maintainable, 
  • aligning it to business value, 
  • and shipping it with confidence. 

AI doesn’t remove the need for those responsibilities. It increases the stakes because now teams can produce more software faster, which means they can also produce more problems faster if the guardrails aren’t there. 

The balance: use AI as a power tool, not a substitute brain 

The best posture isn’t “AI will replace engineers,” or “AI is a fad.” 

The best posture is: AI is a force multiplier, if you stay in control. 

Use it to: 

  • brainstorm options and explore approaches, 
  • draft scaffolding and boilerplate, 
  • generate test ideas (then validate), 
  • refactor safely (with reviews and checks), 
  • speed up documentation and internal enablement, 
  • accelerate learning when you’re operating at the edge of your knowledge. 

But don’t use it to: 

  • ship unreviewed logic into production, 
  • guess at security-sensitive implementations, 
  • make architectural decisions without human accountability, 
  • substitute confidence for verification. 

In other words: work with AI, not through it. 

The hot take: the winners won’t be “best coders,” they’ll be best systems thinkers 

AI is going to widen the gap between two kinds of builders: 

  1. People who use AI to go faster while maintaining rigor 
  2. People who use AI to go faster while skipping rigor 

Both will ship quickly.
Only one will ship sustainably. 

The organizations that win won’t be the ones that replace engineers with prompts. They’ll be the ones that combine AI speed with disciplined engineering: strong review culture, threat modeling, testing strategy, observability, clear architecture, and a mature understanding of what quality really costs. 

Because the future isn’t “anyone can build anything.” 

The future is one where more people can build more things, and the teams that thrive will be the ones that can make those things reliable.
